the technology is used to simulate a mix of firefighting and domestic operations from the air. paul nelson shows us how it works. flight simulator this might look like a video game -- but it's actually a type of training. these guardsmen are using virtual reality for fire fighting missions. wagner "it's really hard to go out and train with the buckets and we can't just go light a tree on fire and go put it out. so, that's one of the big things is we can go in the simulator and do that." these rooms are set up to look and feel like the cockpit of a blackhawk or chinook helicopter -- and the setup includes 240 computers. pilots can choose between video screens or special goggles that allow a 360-degree view. wagner "i've played xbox and those other games but this is

february 5-th is national weatherpersons day. a day we like to celebrate here at channel two. forecasting in western nevada can be challenging but it can also be a lot of fun. one of our meteorologists, angela schilling joins us live in the newsroom - angela, what makes someone want to become a meteorologist? since i was a kid, i always knew i wanted to do something with science or math. eventually i realized meteorology was the right fit for me. it was neat talking to other meteorologists today and hearing their stories. one person i talked to is not only a coworker, but also a mentor of mine here at channel two. the best kind of jobs are the ones you enjoy doing. mike alger: "i say if it's your passion, then do it." for some meteorologists their interest in weather started at a young age. alex hoon now works for the national weather service in reno, but he grew up in tornado alley. alex hoon: "i went to boyscout

old, and i saw a tornado." alex hoon: "ever since then i've been fascinated with the weather." my story is somewhat similar to mike's - always knowing i had an interest in science, but not knowing exactly i wanted to study weather until later in life when... i began enjoying weather classes in college backgrounds, the weather was something that i could drive around, look at the clouds and say hey i know what's going on up there." i've heard this from many meteorologists - that experiencing weather is what got them interested in it. marvin boyd came to reno from north carolina. he loves all types of weather. marvin boyd: "so from a scale from of one to ten how would you rate yourself as far as being a weather nerd? probably an watch." alex hoon has grown to love western weather as well. alex hoon: "i used to really love severe weather, but in recent years i've actually learned to love fire weather alot."
